Mars Global Surveyor is the oldest of five NASA robotic devices, which is designed to find out signs that Mars once had water, and it had been taking detailed pictures of the red planet for a decade. Unfortunately, it stopped working on November 2 after it developed a motor problem. After two days of silence, ground control teams received a signal that the device had put itself into an emergency standby mode. There was no information about what had gone wrong. Since then, the mission team at NASA's laboratory in California has tried to contact the device. This week, NASA engineers are preparing for what may be their last chance to recover the spacecraft.NASA plans to use a newly arrived device to take a picture of the Surveyor to see how the failed craft is oriented to the sun for power and to Earth for communications. It is reported that the picture will be taken on Friday when the satellites are about 93 miles apart. The new high-powered camera should be able to image details of the Surveyor as small as about 10 centimeters. There is a good chance of recovering it.Flight controllers also plan to try to get the Surveyor to contact one or both of NASA's roving geology stations, Spirit and Opportunity, which are located on opposite sides of Mars's equator. The rovers would not be able to transmit the spacecraft's science data, but engineers at least would get an idea of its general position. The linkups also could show if the Surveyor still has power. If the device has been unable to charge its batteries due to a positioning problem or failed component, it could run out of power with no hope of recovering. But if it has power, the device is quite capable of autonomous control even if it doesn't hear from Earth. The Surveyor has far surpassed its design lifetime, but scientists still have more targets for the probe's camera and science instruments.(1) The main task of Mars Global Surveyor is _______.A to find out if there was water on MarsB to work out the problem of its motorC to take pictures of the red planet

Sushi (寿司) is no longer the sole preserve of the adventurous diner. These days, grabbing a pack for lunch is almost as common as picking up a cheese and sandwich. The Japanese dish can be bought from every major supermarket (where sales have risen an astonishing 88 percent in the past two years). Indeed, the British sushi industry—of which Tesco has a 60 percent market share—is worth more than £ 56 million annually. The main reason for its surge in popularity is its reputation as a healthy meal. Japanese women are among the healthiest in the world, while slender celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Keira Knightley are all fans of the raw fish dish. But do sushi's nutrition credentials (证书)—especially the Western version—stack up? Not always, according to dietitian (营养学家) Rachel Beller. In her book Eat To Lose, Eat To Win, she says a "light" lunch of sushi may mean you overdose on calories and carbohydrates (碳水化合 物). "A typical sushi roll contains 290 to 350 calories and has the carbohydrate equivalent of two-and-a-half to four slices of bread," says Ms Beller. Bear in mind a sushi lunch contains two or three of these rolls, a total of up to 1,050 calories, and it's easy to see how we're conning ourselves that we're enjoying a low-calorie, healthy lunch. Many of us believe eating sushi is a good way to get the officially recommended two portions of fish each week, but here's the problem: most sushi contains very little protein, despite its expense. Health experts say a portion of fish should weigh 140g, but on average, the fish in a California roll (round rolled sushi, containing a small piece of fish) or piece of nigiri (rice with fish balanced on the top) weighs just 5g. You'd need to eat 28 pieces of sushi to reach your 140g portion—or more, if you choose a mixed sushi box containing vegetarian varieties. Even "fish" sushi boxes don't contain much. Marks & Spencer Fish Sushi Selection (191g, £ 4.68) has just 36g of fish, meaning you would have to eat four boxes and consume 1,184 calories to get one of your recommended fish portions.1What can we infer from the first paragraph?A.Sushi makes a hit in the UK nowadays.B.Tesco is a giant supermarket selling Sushi only.C.British people prefer sushi to sandwiches and cheese.D.Sushi enjoys popularity only among adventurous diners.2What is the main reason that sushi is becoming popular according to the passage?E.Because it is made of raw fish.F.Because it is regarded as a healthy food.G.Because Japanese women eat it.H.Because world-famous stars follow it.3According to Rachel Beller, a "light" lunch of sushi________.I.contains enough nutrients for the human bodyJ.contains too many rolls in a boxK.is actually deceiving the dieters themselvesL.is providing as equal calories and carbohydrates as bread4As a matter of fact, getting the officially recommended portions of fish is equal to_____.M.eating sushi in various types bought mainly from TescoN.eating a "light" lunch of sushi and four slices of breadO.eating a mixed sushi box containing vegetarian varietiesP.eating 56 California rolls5Which of the following is the best title of this passage?Q.How Sushi Can Make Us FatR.Sushi Is Popular in BritainS.Sushi Is Dangerous to HumansT.What Sushi Is—A Japanese Dish

What is the difference between a college and a university? This is a good question for students who want to attend a college or a university in the United States. Colleges and universities have many things in common. Both provide a greater understanding of the world and its past. Both provide education in the arts and sciences. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living. Students who complete their undergraduate studies either at a four-year college or a university receive a bachelor’s degree. One difference is that many colleges do not offer graduate studies. Universities are generally bigger, offer more programs and do more research. Modern universities developed from those of the Middle Ages in Europe. The word “university” comes from the Latin “universitas”. This described a group of people organized for a common purpose. The word “college” comes from a Latin word with a similar meaning, “collegium”. In England, colleges were formed to provide students with places to live in. Usually each group of students was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study. But a college can also be a part of a university. The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true. Programs in higher learning may also be called schools. The University of Arizona in Tucson, for example, has 18 colleges and 10 schools. They include the colleges of pharmacy (制药学), education, engineering and law. They also include the schools of architecture, dance and public administration. College is also used as a general term for higher education. A news report might talk about “college students” even if they include students at universities. Or someone might ask, “Where do you go to college?”Today, most American colleges offer an area of study called liberal arts. These are subjects first developed and taught in ancient Greece. They include language, philosophy and mathematics. The purpose is to train a person’s mind instead of teaching job skills. 小题1:The passage is probably written to _________. A.persuade students to go to college instead of schoolsB.tell students the differences between colleges and universities C.help students make a better choice of what kind of colleges they should go toD.inform students about how much they are going to spend in going to college小题2:When the term “college students” appears in a newspaper, it may refer to ________.A.only students studying in collegesB.students studying in colleges in the USA C.only students studying in universitiesD.students receiving higher education小题3:What can we learn from the passage?A.Both universities and colleges include different schools.B.The purpose of liberal arts is to train a person’s job skill.C.Both universities and colleges can help prepare students to make a living.D.Most American universities have 18 colleges and 10 schools.小题4:The area of study called liberal arts is designed to _______.A.get students ready to earn a livingB.teach students subjects from engineering to philosophyC.help students achieve a stronger and clearer mindD.encourage more students to begin the study of arts

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
