In ancient times the mostimportant examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancientGreece and Rome, testing usually was made up of saying poetry aloud and givingspeeches. In the European universities ofthe Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discussquestions in their field of study with people who had made a special study ofthe subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testingcandidates(应试者) for the doctor’s degree. Generally, however, modernexaminations are written. The written examination, where all students aretested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenthcentury. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in populationand the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a stateexamination timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over bymanagers, looks like a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimescalled an “objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personalopinions. To make up an objective test, the teacher writes a series ofquestions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each questionthe teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look likeanswers to students who have not learned the material properly. 1.The main idea of ParagraphThree is that ___________ . A. workers now takeexaminations B. the population has grown C. there are only writtenexams today D. examinations are now written and timed 2.The kind of exams wherestudents must select answers are ___________ . 单选题根据材料回答题Cats have the widest hearing range of nearly any mammal” not only can they perceive sound in what we define as the “ultrasonic” range, they can also appreciate all the bass Dr Dre can throw at them. They can swivel their whiskers forwards while hunting to provide a kind of short-range radar. And they can see exceptionally well in the dark thanks to a reflective surface behind the retina that bounces light back, giving it a second chance to hit a photoreceptor. They see more distinct images per second than we do.Dog partisans will appeal to the dog’s allegedly superior intelligence — though if that were the primary criterion for choosing a pet, one would expect to see a lot more crows and squid on leads around town. In fact, cats are rather cleverer than commonly assumed, as the biologist and animal-behaviour expert John Bradshaw shows in his new book. They can even be trained to an extent which was news to me Bradshaw’s book mixes pellets of cat lore with accounts of feline evolution, anatomy, genetics and development from newborn kitten to adulthood, plus descriptions of cat-psychology experiments in the laboratory, many of which he has conducted himself. Some of the most interesting parts indicate holes in our current scientific knowledge. “Many mother cats try to move their litters at least once before they wean them,” he observes, “but science has yet to find out why”. No one knows why cats go crazy for catnip, nor why they are able “to classify shapes according to whether they are closed or open.” Kittens, meanwhile, “may also use special movements of their tails to signal playfulness, but so far no scientist has been able to decode these”. As far as potential research projects go, decoding the tail-language of playing kittens must be about the interesting unsolved problem in science. The cat is an apparentlyphlegmatic beast, but Bradshaw points out that cats experience strong emotions, and sometimes might be suffering in silence. They aren’t particularly sociable, and cats who are housed with others who weren’t litter-mates — perhaps by well-meaning owners who think they need the company — can become chronically stressed.Luckily, then, cats probably aren’t aware that today they are once again hate-figures, the furry target of spittle-spraying ecologists who, armed with dodgy statistics, accuse cats of wildly “murdering” all the country’s songbirds. It’s a bit more complicated than that, Bradshaw shows. Rats also kill songbirds, and cats keep their numbers down; while the RSPB says the disappearance of habitat is a far more important factor in the decline of songbird populations than predator numbers. But we could at least, Bradshaw suggests, reverse the counterproductive selection pressure we currently exert on the domestic cat when we neuter house cats before they reproduce. This means, he explains, that the “friendliest, most docile” cats are prevented from leaving any descendants, while wild cats — which are more suspicious of humans and better at hunting— will leave more offspring. Unintentionally, we arecausing cats to evolve into animals society won’t like as much Cat-haters probably won’t appreciate this book, but anyone else might. It is written in a friendly and engaging way, has helpful tips for cat owners, and is packed with excellent cat facts. Why, you might have wondered, do cats get stuck up trees? Because all their claws face forwards, so none can be used as brakes on the descent. We all know how good cats are at twisting mid-air to land on their feet, but they have an even more impressive trick: some cats adopt a “parachute” position during a long fall, with all four legs stuck out to the side, before coming back to the landing position at the last moment. This cat-parachute pose, Bradshaw calculates, “limits the falling speed to a maximum of fifty-three miles an hour” so enabling some cats to fall from high-rise buildings and walk away unhurt. I’d like to see a dog try that. What can be inferred about cats from Bradshaw’s research? A.Cats’ whiskers can aid them to confuse preys. B.Cats can detect sounds far away from them. C.Cats can process images better than we do. D.Cats’ intelligence has been underestimated.

The casual Friday concept (概念) was one of the first signs that strict dress rules for offices were starting to relax. The principle of casual Friday seems to have appeared around the 1950s. I will take you to the deepest but least known parts of our planet. I's said that 95% of the world's oceans are unknown. You will be surprised at seeing a dolphin spitting water, a fish that uses, tools, and a hairy Hoff crab. In its early history,Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this:A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street.Asked if he needs help,he replies,"No,thanks.I've got a good horse under me."The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced me the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet. This of course created a new problem:dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago.Building owners were faced with a choice:either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors,or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level.Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building? That's where George Pullman came in.He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel,Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly.Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to clean the polluted river.29.The author mentions the joke to show ____ .A.horses were fairly useful in ChicagoB.Chicago's streets were extremely muddyC.Chicago was very dangerous in the springD.the Chicago people were particularly humorous30.The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to ____ .A.get rid of the street dirtB.lower the Chicago RiverC.fight against heavy floods D.build the pipes above ground31.The underlined word"hoist"in Paragraph 4 means" ____ ".A.changeB.liftC.repairD.decorate32.What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel? ____ A.It went on smoothly as intended.B.It interrupted the business of the hotel.C.It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.D.It separated the building from its foundation.33.The passage is mainly about the early Chicago's ____ .A.popular life styles and their influencesB.environmental disasters and their causesC.engineering problems and their solutionsD.successful businessmen and their achievements.

  • The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. • question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty

  • The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.
