Internet use nowadays appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being, according to some researchers. Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn't that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings.Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others who are of a much broader range. The fact that Internet reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being. Faceless, bodiless "virtual" communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives. But some psychologists, who are also the study's sponsors, say it's important to remember this is not about the technology, it's about how it is used. It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.1.Which is the effect of Internet use?A) Internet users become addictive to the Internet.B) Internet users have psychological problems.C) Internet users experience more depression and loneliness.D) Internet users are spending more time on the Internet.2.What is the relationship between the Internet and people's feelings?A) Bad feelings cause addiction to the Internet.B) Net use causes the users' bad feelings.C) Depression causes the users' frequent logging on the Internet.D) People's feelings seldom change when they log on the Internet.3.Why is Internet use thought to be negative?A) It cannot provide time for the relationship with family and friends.B) It is limited between friends.C) It cannot show the users sufficient information.D) Communication via Internet cannot be psychologically satisfying for the users.

People who are obese (过度肥胖) are at increased risk of becoming depressed, and people who are depressed are at increased risk of becoming obese, Dutch researchers have found. Luppino of Leiden University Medical Center, the Netherlands, said the analysis was not designed to determine a given person's risk of depression, only to figure out how much obesity increased that risk. However, for comparison, a recent study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health found that nearly one out of four cases of obesity is associated with a mood or anxiety disorder. Their findings appear to support what other studies have found—that obesity, which is on the increase in the US—is associated with increasing rates of depression and other mental health problems. In contrast to obesity, the association between depression and being overweight (but not obese) did not run the other way, Luppino noted. Being overweight increased the risk of depression in initially non-depressed individuals somewhat, but depression did not increase the risk of being overweight over time. The findings, reported in the latest issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, also suggest that the link between obesity and later depression is more pronounced among Americans than among Europeans. Why? "A dose-response association—meaning the higher the Body Mass Index is, the more depressed people get—might explain the association," Luppino said. And the average American weighs more than the average European. However, the effect of the psychological distress should not be neglected, the researcher said. "Overweight and obesity can induce low self-esteem and body dissatisfaction," Luppino explained, "especially in Western countries where thinness is often considered a beauty ideal." "Because both depression and obesity carry major health implications, it is very important to try to prevent and treat both," Luppino said. The Dutch team encourages doctors to collaborate (合作) and exchange their professional skills. Doctors treating patients who are overweight or obese could screen their patients for depression and vice versa—psychiatrists (精神病医生) or general doctors encountering depressed patients could suggest their overweight patients see a doctor who can help them balance their diet, Luppino suggests.1. What's the purpose of the study by Luppino of Leiden University Medical Center?A) To find out how common depression is among people.B) To find out how depression patients can be cured.C) To find out the risk of depression caused by obesity. D) To find out the approximate death rate of depression.2. What is the meaning of "pronounced" in Paragraph 5?A) Readable.B) Declared.C) Uttered.D) Definite. 3. What can we learn from the fact that Americans are fatter than Europeans?A) Americans are more likely to get depressed B) Americans are not satisfied with their life.C) Europeans have very low self-esteems.D) Europeans don't often eat fast food.4. What suggestion does Luppino give to doctors who treat depressed patients?A) They should learn from other doctors to improve their skills.B) They should consider the patients' diet while treating them. C) They should treat the patients by using anti-depression drugs.D) They should examine medical history of the patients' family.5. What's the main idea of this passage?A) Depressed people are more likely to be overweight.B) Overweight people are more likely to be depressed.C) Overweight and depression are well connected. D) Overweight and depression are totally separate.
Sociologists (社会学家) have developed elaborate theories of who spreads small talks and news—who tells whom, who matters most in social networks—but they've had less success measuring what kind of information travels fastest. Do people prefer to spread good news or bad news? Would we rather shock the readers with improper behavior or enlighten them? Which stories do social creatures want to share, and why? Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that people preferred e-mailing articles with positive rather than negative themes, and they liked to send long articles on intellectually challenging topics. Perhaps most of all, readers wanted to share articles that inspired astonishment, an emotion that the researchers investigated after noticing how many science articles made the list. In general, they found, 20 percent of articles that appeared on the Times home page made the list, but the rate rose to 30 percent for science articles. "Science kept doing better than we expected," said Dr. Berger, a social psychologist (心理学家) and a professor of marketing at Penn's Wharton School. "We anticipated that people would share articles with practical information about health, and they did, but they also sent articles about earth science. You'd see articles shooting up the list that were about the physics of light of deer vision." The motivation for mailing these astonishment-inspiring articles is not as immediately obvious as with other kinds of articles, Dr. Berger said. Sharing cooking skills or financial tips or medical advice makes sense according to classic economic utility theory: I give you something of practical value in the hope that you'll someday return the favor. There can also be self-interested reasons for sharing surprising articles: I get to show off how well informed I am by sending news that will shock you. But in general, people who share this kind of article seem to have greater motives than trying to impress their friends. They're seeking emotional communication, Dr. Berger said. "If I've just read this story that changes the way I understand the world and myself, I want to talk to others about what it means. If you read the article and feel the same emotion, it will bring us closer together."1. What is the present situation of sociologists' study on news travel in people's life?A) They have just worked out a perfect theory of who enjoys sharing news with others.B) They expect to find out what kind of news is the most popular in social network. C) They have failed to discover the type of news which spreads faster than others.D) Their theory about people who are likely to receive news needs to be developed.2. What did researchers at the University of Pennsylvania find about people's preference of news?A) Articles with sophisticated knowledge were more widely read by people.B) Information of common sense was the most popular type of news among people.C) Articles with interesting subjects were more frequently sent by people to their friends.D) Messages leading to surprise were the most widely spread in people's life. 3. What was the result of investigation on types of articles sent by readers?A) News from the Times took a minor part.B) Practical information held a great share.C) General science was the most popular.D) Physical science was more often shared. 4. According to Dr. Berger, why did people love to share astonishment-inspiring articles?A) They wanted to become emotionally closer by this means. B) They intended to learn from each other by doing so.C) They loved to show off their special tastes in this way.D) They expected a further explanation from friends through this.5. What can be inferred from this passage?A) Friendship might be enhanced by sharing messages. B) Information of health maintenance might not be sent.C) The theory of information sharing might remain the same.D) Readers' life might be enriched with article exchanges.

Exceptional children are different in some significant ways from others of the same age. Although we pay main attention to the needs of exceptional children, we find ourselves describing their environment as well. Both the family and the society in which exceptional children live are often the key to their growth and development. Education in any society is a mirror of society. In that mirror we can see the strengths, the weaknesses, the hopes, the prejudices, and the central values of the culture. The great interest in exceptional children shows that all citizens should be given the chance to fully develop their abilities. We've heard "All men are created equal" many times, but it still has important meaning for education in a democratic society. Although the phrase was used by this country's founders to mean equality before law, it has also been intended to mean equality of chance. That idea means educational chance for all children—the right of each child to receive help in learning to the limits of his or her ability, whether that ability be small or great. Recent court decisions have proved the right of all children—disabled or not—to a proper education, and have ordered that public schools take the necessary steps to provide that education. In answer, schools are reshaping their programs, suiting instruction to children who are exceptional, to those who cannot profit well from regular programs.1.What can be inferred from the passage?A) The family and the society are very important for the exceptional children.B) We have ignored the development of the exceptional children.C) We can see the exceptional children's development from the society.D) It matters when a family has exceptional children.2.What does "All men are created equal" mean to the exceptional children?A) The chances to receive help.B) Equality before law.C) Equality of educational chance.D) The right to live.3.Which is NOT the correct strategy to the exceptional children?A) Providing them the suiting instruction.B) Reshaping school programs for them.C) Helping them benefit well from regular programs.D) Helping them benefit well from the suiting instructions.

The Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling, is perhaps the most popular set of novels of the modern era. With seven books and many successful films to its name, the series has gathered about 15 billion dollars in sales. How did the series become so popular? The reason can be broken down into several areas. The first book in the series was rejected 12 times before it was picked up by Bloomsbury—a small publisher in England. So receiving this contract was Rowling's first step to success. However, getting a book contract does not ensure the success of a book. The story was soon loved by children and adults alike. In light of this, Bloomsbury Publishing published a second version of the books with “adult” (less colorful and more boring) book covers. This made it easier for a full range of ages to enjoy the series.Another factor that worked like a charm was that the publisher and Rowling herself, through the books, conducted midnight releases, promotions, and pre-ordering more readers. Customers who feared that their local bookstore would run out of copies responded by pre-ordering over 700,000 copies before the July 8, 2000 release. What does the underlined word “releases” (Para. 3) mean?A. The activity that frees or expresses energy or emotion.B. The announcement about the book’s publishing information.C. The sales of books that is available only at midnight.

The increase in international business and in foreign investment has created a need for executives with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. Americans, however, have not been well trained in either area and, consequently, have not enjoyed the same level of success in negotiation in an international arena as have their foreign counterparts. Negotiating is the process of communicating back and forth for the purpose of reaching an agreement. It involves persuasion and compromise, but in order to participate in either one, the negotiators must understand the ways in which people are persuaded and how compromise is reached within the culture of the negotiation. In many international business negotiations abroad, Americans are perceived as wealthy and impersonal. It often appears to the foreign negotiator that the American represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation that can afford to pay the price without bargaining further. The American negotiator’s role becomes that of an impersonal supplier of information and cash. In studies of American negotiators abroad, several traits have been identified that may serve to confirm this stereotypical perception, while undermining the negotiator’s position. Two traits in particular that cause cross-cultural misunderstanding are directness and impatience on the part of the American negotiator. Furthermore, American negotiators often insist on realizing short-term goals. Foreign negotiators, on the other hand, may value the relationship established between negotiators and may be willing to invest time in it for long-term benefits. In order to solidify the relationship, they may opt for indirect interactions without regard for the time involved in getting to know the other negotiator. Clearly, perceptions and differences in values affect the outcomes of negotiations and the success of negotiators. For Americans to play a more effective role in international business negotiations, they must put forth more effort to improve cross-cultural understanding. [共5题](1)What kind of manager is needed in present international business and foreign investment? [本题2分]A. The man who represents a large multi-million-dollar corporation. B. The man with knowledge of foreign languages and skills in cross-cultural communication. C. The man who is wealthy and impersonal. D. The man who can negotiate with his foreign counterparts.

question or statement.Hot pot is a traditional dish in China. It is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of the Jin Dynasty. Hot pot's origins can be found in the dining practices of Mongolian horsemen who rode across the steppe and into northern China. Legend has it that the Mongols used their helmets as pots to simmer (炖) broth (汤底) over open fires, and cooked chunks of meat in the broth.Hot pot cooking seems to have spread to northern China during the Tang Dynasty. In the regional variations developed with different ingredients such as seafood. In the centuries that witnessed the growth of the Song Dynasty, hot pot moved — and changed — further south, with each successive region adapting it to their local ingredients and tastes. The ingredients in a hot pot vary a lot from region to region. Perhaps the most famous hot pot is the Chongqing or Sichuan hot pot. It features a dark red broth chock-full (塞满了的) of spices, chili peppers, and the uniquely mouth-numbing Sichuan peppers. In Beijing and elsewhere in the north, hot pot broth tends to be mild and, compared to its racy southern "cousins", a little light. In the northeast of China, a kind of local sauerkraut (酸菜) is used to add some tang (强烈的味道), making the broth a bit sour. People can choose a version of hot pot according to their taste.1 Hot pot is believed to date back more than 1,000 years to the time of _______.A. the Jin Dynasty B. the Tang DynastyC. the Song Dynasty D. the Yuan Dynasty
